Popups Issues?

Is anyone else getting random ads and such while on secundi lately?
I get little ads that slide into view on the lower right corner, and if I dont click the 'x' to close it in less than 2 seconds, the ad plays whatever it pleases and I have to move to another page to get rid of it.
I had norton security and just removed it, putting Webroot in its place. I have no viruses on my computer and I use Windows 8. I've never had issues until the past week or two with these ads.

And on a side note, when I go on certain websites other than secundi, I get similar ads in the corner, OR I get a whole new page that I've noticed is always the same exact ad and its telling me I won something and if I don't click to claim it within a few seconds, it starts playing the ring tone for Iphones... ?

WHAT IS THIS?!! D:

Ember

Hmm, I'd say try clearing your cookies/internet cache and see if that gets rid of it. I can't say that I've had that issue since I have the google ad blocker on Chrome so I never get any ads. Otherwise I use Norton and Windows 7 so our circumstances are different.

Wildfilly94

Google ad blocker? Could you tell me how to get this?

Wildfilly94

Well, I still want the ad blocker thing but I think I may have fixed my problem. XD
Some weird extension got downloaded on my computer somehow, and I just deleted it and so far no ads. ;-;

Ryuukokoro

Yeah, I am using a Windows 8 laptop and I got a very similar virus program recently. Well, it's not really a virus, but it's a program that installs itself on your computer and gives you various pop up ads and sometimes directs you to other sites while you're using your web browser. It's very aggravating. It doesn't have anything to do with Secundi, you got it somewhere else. (I was checking out taobao.com, the Chinese version of ebay, when I got mine.)

The program I got was called BetterSurf, though obviously it does the opposite of its name. :P

Here's the site I used to get rid of my issues:

Oh I see, well thats very helpful!!

Update: It was for sure the extension that added itself to my computer somehow that was the culprit. Yeay for secundi not being bad! :D

It was called Websteroids. Said it destorys websites (ad blocker) and yet, it was giving me tons of ads. Once uninstalled, my computer is now free of ads!

That's the store page for it. It's free. You can turn it on/off for specific sites if you'd like, as some smaller websites use ads to keep the site paid for.

Glad you got it all figured out!  Viruses/Adware like that can be so annoying!  I remember years ago my computer got one that would cause it to randomly start blasting heavy metal music.  Took forever to finally get rid of it.

SkySong

Silv, somehow I find yours very amusing. I think I'd keep it just for the novelty of it for a bit before getting rid of it. (I do have a personal computer, and the speakers are their own separate unit, so I don't think it would be that harmful for me unless I was trying to listen to something.)

It was pretty funny.  XD  But it was also my work computer, and having random music start up as I or anyone else in the room was on the phone with a customer was a no-go, and it turned out I really did need my volume on for certain parts of the job.  ^^

Wildfilly94

XD that's an awesome ad pop up silv! I wish mine had been that cool. Lol!!

And thank you ember for the link! :)

I have that "addon" on my Firefox, the BetterSurf Plus one.  I have no clue how it was added, and I disabled it, but it keeps re-enabling itself/coming back.  Another one that is annoying is Re-Markit.  I don't get the pop ups from them because I also have the AdBlock addon with my lists updated.  So for me all they do really, is change some (A lot) of the words on the Secundi forums into links that if I hover the mouse over them open a temporary window type thing attached to my cursor with test inside and a link to various places related in some way to whatever the word was I hovered over.

Not "too" bad in and of itself, except I tend to follow along the text with my mouse as I read stuff, so yea..  I just keep disabling/removing them, but they are quite persistent in coming back once removed.

Kadana - I would figure out which site it is that's giving you that stuff. Completely wipe them from your system, then start going back to the sites you regularly visit. (I think Secundi is a safe bet, but then again, I can't be sure.) If you can't actually get them to go away for good, try uninstalling your browser and reinstalling it, or try moving to a different one. This can also cause problems if you have lots of bookmarks (I know I do), but it's up to you whether it's worth it or not.

Yea, I went for months without doing anything online at all except Secundi and paying my bills.  This after removing them and running antivirus, and doing a disc cleanup.  They came back three times during my "bored" period.  (Bored because lets face it, Secundi is "home" but it isn't always active enough to keep you busy.. certainly not for months straight, by itself).

I don't feel it's worth it to use another browser, I am used to FireFox, and every time I have to change browsers, upgrade to a new windows, etc, I get super anxious and cranky.  This only happens on the comp the "chemist" boyfriend built for me mind you.  I did get the Better Surf addon on my shuttle, removed it, it never came back.  So for now I just muddle through until he can come for another visit and hopefully figure out what's going on lol

Hrm. My dad's the expert, not me, so as long as you're not crazy up the walls, I guess waiting for him won't be too bad.

Yes those text links are also one of the things SurfBetter does. Very annoying. If you go to the link I provided, Kadana, there's a 7-step process for getting rid of that stuff for good. Worked for me, I would give it a try!

I have a Mac, and Adblock Plus, plus MacScan, plus PrivacyScan is my go-to "kill nasty viruses before they get me" plan.  However, for you Windows users, I've heard lots of good things about MalwareBytes in terms of picking up spyware and things like that that may give you popups.

Ryuukokoro

Yes MalwareBytes is fricken amazing. I've revived computers that were pretty much nothing but hunks of dead plastic, thanks to that program.

I once had a virus on a laptop that not only disabled every single program on the machine, so not a thing would run, but the virus also wouldn't let you install any new program to the machine either so I couldn't install any new virus cleaning software. I finally managed to clean the laptop by running MalwareBytes off a flash drive.

I have heard some cautionary tales online, though, because MalwareBytes is so powerful that it sometimes deletes a program your computer really needs while it's sweeping out the viruses. But I personally never had that problem.

Bunraku

also watch out for a little beast called mysearchdial that will trigger itself to download (hiding dormant in your PC) when you patch games, pretending to be pando media booster. It will get in, take over firefox, and download additionall irritants: something called reg clean pro, advanced system protector, and my pc backup. All of which will spam you with popups from your desktop. Very annoying. Looks like the winter computer "cold season" is coming to town again, anyone ever notice how plauges of these things start in january?

Anyway, gone a year and a half on this computer without contracting anything, now I'm up to my ears in adware that none of my virus softwear is managing to get out. Will  be trying malwarebytes today on the advice of a friend.

Still amazed this got in, though, given my track record of keeping this computer safe.
