My Eggs/Pets.. they would appreciate some love :)

sera

i shall dub my lovely. . . Ty-Ku.  ^^

Gene Pool

I realized I could condense the genetic coding a bit, finally worked out how to do that. here is what 1 fish's code string looks like:
011001^0110^0110101
1022012+^2221100^122012+

and no, I wont crack it for you lol

Since it has been condensed a bit.. IC the scientists realized they had thier count off a bit. there are 38 pairs of genes, 21 dedicated to color, and 17 to unknown things.

*totally lost* o.O

erm...so how do we go about breeding and finding out what they carry? XD

Ravvana

My inner genetics geek is excited and totally lost XD Can't wait to start breeding these guys ;)

Gene Pool

Im working on the details with breeding right now- dont want to set something up and find out it doesnt work and have to start all over.

A couple interesting things to note: because of storyline, and my wish for these to be bred and tinkered with breeding, there will never be a 101th starter fish! There were only 100 fish in that lab. Once those are homed, the only way of aquiring more is from breeding.

On that note, I am debating limiting how many babies you can keep from a spawn, or how much you can sell babies for, unsure if such limits would be good or bad for this adoptable overall. Feedback welcome.

One thing I have decided on- you may "donate a baby to science". Doing so will mean you give up ownership of the baby, so it can be rehomed, possible in non-owner events. In exchange, the scientist will give you genetic hints. Either on cracking the gene code itself, or on what the fish you donated has (so you can try to figure out what your parent fish has)

oh my! limited starter fishies....must get a pink one! XD

limiting would be good, so inbreeding has a smaller chance of accidently occurring. like the Kennel :)

love that idea! *so eager to breed Sludge now*

Inbreeding wont hurt them. Otherwise, a few generations down the line, we'd have a species of blind fish or some such. So, sort of the opposite of kennel. These arent real, with purity of bloodlines, they are a genetic anomoly. They appear to be completely sound geneticly, with no inhertable flaws.

Im doing that because I almost have to, if I wish to limit starters.

BTW, if the scientists give you a gene-code cracking hint, it is entirely up to you if you want to keep the info to yourself, or share with the class!

oooohh well in that case maybe still a limit, but a larger limit? well actually depends on how many offspring can be produced in one go. if it's something like 5, I don't think a limit is needed. ^^

so if you get a hint then you could know what your fish could produce in offspring?

Say for example your baby carries blue and the scientists tell you so, you know one of the parents carries blue. I'm thinking the more non-color genes a donated baby shows, the more tips the scientists will offer in exchange.

For those genetics geeks out there (I know there's a few) these are a bit confusing- every single gene is on its own marker. So, if for example, yellow were dominant over black, your fish could have 2 yellow genes (YY) and 2 black genes (BB), but only show its yellow. If it breeds with something that has (yy) and (BB) the baby will have black instead and carry yellow.

FYI, yellow and black aren't on the genetic coding, so these examples aren't hints!

yellow and black = orange? o.o

Gene Pool

No, that was me being a dork and mistyping. Originally, I had put in orange, but edited it to yellow, as orange is an actual geneticly marked color.

There's everyone's free hint! :D

red_uni387

yay free hint!

okay now I understand the gene coding :)

Gene Pool

The suggestion has been made from a private source that I limit how many times in its life a fish can breed. Feedback?

Kadana Sorano

eh I would, seriously dislike that.

It's too close to people putting in their kennel contracts "don;t over breed or I shall reposess" and their interpretation of over-breeding is to not breed the dog more then X number of times.

If the dog (or fish, in this case) is going to be around and not grow old, not die etc, then I see no point in limiting how many total times it can be bred.

In real animals, this makes much sense, but in picture animals, they don't age, don't die etc.. it just seems silly.

I do however, advocate limiting how "often" any given pet can breed.  Like, don't breed the same pet two breedings in a row.  Not sure how often breedings will happen, but I would suggest to limit how many breeding "seasons" have to pass before a pet can be bred again instead of limiting a total number of breedings.

unless you are going to start aging them, and giving them random aging illnesses etc, and eventually killing them off from old age?

And honestly, I can't say I'd want that overly much either lol

Ooo, I need to get involved in this adoptable.  :)

And, on limiting breeding - if we're going to be figuring out genetics, the ability to breed back to any particular individual to confirm what it carries may become very important (also may be important for estabilishing lines that breed true, another goal I can see people going for with this adoption).  That may become difficult if an individual's number of breedings is limited.  So, I'd vote no.
