SGA Hiring colorist/s. Full or part time, or even guest.

Not sure if this should be here or in artwork someplace but..

Well, I'm not a great colorist.  I love to color, but I don't feel my skills are really all that hot.  I have considered hiring a colorist off and on for a long time now.  But some recent acquisitions of new adopty art has finally decided me.  I need help.

I have, atm, one set fully ready to introduce.  It is an arabian horse set I purchased form Wild_as_Thunder.  I would like (for now atleast) for them to be colored realisticlaly.  By that I mean no purple horses with pink polkadots or such.  I MIGHT allow for fantasy colored later on, but for now fantasy is a no.

I don't know yet if I will allow you (full/part time colorists) to run your own events.  That is something I will have to think about, if people even want to.

As for payments, payments can range from a percentage of whatever the ones you color are sold for, to cyo's.. I'm pretty open minded, if there is something you'd like as payment, and prefer over all others, let me know.  I'm willing to atleast consider it.

ATM my most presing need is for intro's.  So if you want to color, but don't want to tie yourself to my adopty shop as a full/part time colorist, then by all means feel free to apply as a guest colorist.  kepe in mind however, it IS Intro's, no money earned on my end, so payment for working for intro's won't be a lot.

These are templated.  Wattty fully templated them bfore sending them to me.  That means the cert is included in the psd file you will be coloring on.  HOWEVER.. you are not to cert.  Just color.  I will do all certing.  Seriously, if you try and fiddle with the cert I will be rather upset.  I'm very particular about my certing, and keep data files on my comp.  If you try certing, you could mess up my data.  So just don't.  Please.

A note on foals.. if you color a foal, I will expect/require you to color it's grown stage as well.  As I said I'm not a great colorist, and I don't want to try and match your coloring when growing time comes.  I'll fail.  Horribly.  So any foals colored, will be required to come with an adult stage colored as well.

If you have no realistically colored examples available, then you cna use some of weres free coloring pages to color some up.  Alternatively, I can see if I can find you something to color, if you prefer.

I don't use msn any more, but someone told me it is compatible with yahoo.  I'm not sure if that is true or not, or how it works though.  I'll have to try and look into that.

Hee I just saw your in Australia too.  One of these days I'll get over my fear of plains/boats and get to visit there.  Well, hopefully.  My fears are very strong lol

I'm not sure how many would be needed for Intro's, honestly.  Usually I color up bunches (20 or more) for the first week, and still have most left over at the end of week three.  I've always had trouble figuring out how to draw interest to my events.  So this time, I was thinking of going smaller.  Just a small handful for each week in intro's.  If I could manage to adopt out one a day I'd be happy lol but my track record gives me doubts.  I'm hoping it will go better with Watty's lines and a good colorist.

Thing is I want to run them on pi and here, and I'm pretty sure I shouldn't use the same horses in both events.

hmm  too much in my head at once.. arg ok how about for intro's, I mark you down as a guest colorist.  No minimum or maximum you have to color, but for every two you color for the intro period you can color one for your self (to keep, or gift (or sell once intro's is over)).  Alternatively I can pay you 5k (pg) each for the ones you color for intro's period.  Again, no minimum/maximum you would be required to color, being as it's Intro's and you'd be down as a guest colorist.

Just thinking "out loud" as it were, I'm very open to any suggestions/ideas.  Oh yes, and it isn't a huge rush.  While I do want to intro them soon, it isn't like I will be doing so tomorrow or anything.  I need to get the story writ up for them, and I still haven't decided on a name..

I'm actually trying to separate the cert from the rest of the files right now.  I think I want to resize it bigger.  But I can't (don't know how) with it attached to the other layers, it keeps making the horses bigger as well..  So yes, working on seperating them lol  So I'll be on and off for a while, if you want to discuss things more.

yes, Watty included shading and highlighting on seperate layers for all three stages.  (there are also bridles for the adults and a halter for the foal, again seperate layers, but those won't be given out with all the horses.) 

The coloring however, is all on the same layer.  (hooves, body, eyes.. all the same layer.)  Only the mane/tail colors are differant layers.

which is part of why I'm leery to color them, I don't feel I am skilled enough.  (though I will certainly be trying anyway) lol

I'd be happy to have you join meh team *hides the fact she currently HAS no team* ahem yes well lol  working on that..  But if you want Horses in payment for the ones you color for free events, I'll go you the same as I offered Mutt.  Every 2 you color for free events, you get one for yourself.  (you can make your own events for those if you want, to sell/give away, whatever.. and that goes for anyone who hires on and wants horses as payment for coloring)  If that made sense..

Ahhhh, that sounds very similar to how the kennel templates are colored.  I make my own layers for specific areas as I go (like markings on their own layer), then merge them back to the main color layer before handing them over

*hugs Indigo* I know, I know!  But I still didn't expect much, even so.  I'm happily suprised lol  And well, the one for every two you color is for if your coloring for free events (I'm not making money anyway) or if people want that instead of a payment 9for paid events) so either way, it works for me.  Plus, I've never had help before (outside of family) so I'm just very happy right now lol

I don't know if you're looking for public opinion or just your colorist's opinions but I like them both but I think you should cut down on the number of fonts you have in such a small space.  In my opinion you should stick with the script font (the one that has SGA's Storm Chasers in it) and maybe do a serif font like Bookman Old Style or Baskerville Old Face for your other stuff.  With three different fonts it looks cluttered and with adding that little ornate-ness at the corner it just looks even more so.

Without would save me so much headache on space!  But it's pretty, and watty made it, so I figured I'd see what folks wanted before removing it.

Quyllur public opinion is alays welcomed, thank you.  The fonts I use are typical to my adopty line though.  The only reason there is 3 instead of two is because I know the fancier fonts is hard to read for some and I want the artists credits to be readable easily, so that always get an arial font.  I may change the other two yet, dunno.  Depends how well adobe behaves.  it's disliking wattys cert for some reaosn and crashing whenever I try and change anything.  The ornate piece in the corner is, as I said, relaly pretyt.  But I did wonder if it made it too cluttered with everythign else.  Ironiclaly enough, my bf likes it.

however with his past history of disreguard for anythign art, that just made me wonder more about removing it lol

I've made some notes, so you will need to see larger view to read them.  For  the colorists symbol, the colored box is where your symbol will go.. but the color of the box please ignore that won't be there.  Just the cert behind it.

The other part, I made amemorial kittikin for someone and made the angel to go on the cert, to show it is a memorial.  I've been thinking of adding it to all my sga certs for use if anyone ever gets a memorial done.  it will only go on memorials though, it can be removed for all others.

Noted.  Ok, I moved the text box over his back.  (hmm which of you did I discuss that with again? Sorry, you can slap me any time!)  And then made the canvas smaller, but kept the horse/text box the same size.  Just trimming away the excess I guess.  Is this any better?  Horse is still the same size, just on a smaller canvas..  This is as small as I can trim it without making the horse smaller though, it's 648 x 640.. I supose thumbnails can be used for on PI.. or I can have two differant sizes, one for pi one for here, since pi cuts it off at 550 width.  Thoughts?

Indigo..  The blue square was a place holder, to show where I was considering placing the colorists symbol, as well as to show a max size for it.

However.. I traded the symbol and ID# places, just switched them around.  This (I think) looks better, having the symbol in the corner.  It also, will allow for a little larger symbols if need be (like someone's ferrets perhaps )

YLO.. thank you for stopping by and giving feedback!  And I like the re-sized, but I like the full sized.  both have pro's and con's for me.  I hate being a thread stretcher, so I like the re-sized one for that (they will be on pi as well, and their forums have a smaller width allowance then here).  But I, personally, have trouble reading the text on the re-sized one.  I worry if anyone else that has vision problems will also have trouble reading it.  And I know from personal experience, if I cannot read a cert, I won;t collect the adopty no matter how much I like it.  Also, there was some concern over detail being lost on the horse itself when re-sized.  So, I think I'm going to go with the full size and just use thumbnails on Pi.  And yes, I am definitely going to bring them here, that's what I bought them for


Everyone.. I have now finished fiddling with the certs.  I have worked to get certs ready for all stages.  I'll post examples at the end of this post, please do give any feed back.  A point to remember.. the angel in the upper right corner will not be visible on most certed horses, it is there only to show how the cert will look if the horse happens to be a memorial.  The text in the bottom right corner will be replaced with the colorists chosen symbol, mark, or even their name (if the name is small enough).  Feedback very much appreciated, if there aren't too many objections it, then I will use these.


Colorists.. I need to know how you want your name listed in the credits on the website, as well as what position you want listed as.

For example..

Colorist: Mutt on Secundi
Guest Colorist: Lectral on Pony Island
Colorist (Part Time): Indigowulf on pony Island & Secundi

..or do you want to use your DA name (or some other name) etc.  Just let me know, I need to get the site updated, and I'd prefer to have you listed in credits before running any events featuring your horses.

Oh yes!  I also took quyllur's advice and reduced the number of fonts down to two.  I also changed the main font, to coincide with the other SGA certs.  I think it's much easier to read, though the others were prettier and fancier.

hrm.. don't think I'm forgetting anything else.. going to go get coffee and find food, then see if I can work on the intro story a bit.

I could re-size it after all the information is entered in, before saving it as a png file yes.  But you'd have to specifically request it each time, for each horse.  otherwise I'd just forget.

Also, the psd copies would remain saved as full size, so I could easily make changes if/when needed.  Like adding bridles, or turning a stallion into a gelding.  Of course you don't get the psd's, so it wouldn't make a difference to you, except that when I make changes I might forget to re-size it back down before saving as a png lol

I have a very bad memory, I need reminded of things quite often.  but yes, I could certainly give you a smaller version if that is your preference.  The text box would still be located as it is now however.
