Warning, I intend to post about the movie, my thoughts, and changes I saw that I didn't like from the book.

So, if you haven't seen the movie and you intend to and don't want it spoiled, please TURN BACK NOW!

XD

Weeeeeell, I saw it. I thought the art was amazing. I really love the studio that made it. I approve of the choice there. They are cute and fluffy and all around amazing.

But first I want to talk about the characters.

First of all... Digger. Am I the only one who didn't picture Digger as a total jittery spazz? I mean, he was supposed to be funny, but not almost insain looking.

And then, Twilight. I really enjoyed his character in the book, but I didn't fancy him at all in the movie. The voice... not really the right voice for him in my mind. I think the voice was a great voice. But not for Twilight. I didn't enjoy how his whole character was about singing. No. I didn't get that from the book. He was a singer and a poet, but that wasn't the main detail about him. No. He was a much more developed character than that.

I really loved Nyra. I thought she was beautiful, as she was described in the book. She was charming. I know she is completely evil to the core, but she was one of the best characters in the movie. I feel like they captured her so well!

METAL BEAK? Whhhhaaaaaaaaaaaat?
WHAT?
WHHHHAAAT?!
If I remember correctly, Metal Beak IS the mate to Nyra, but that's because Metal Beak IS Kludd.
He was not some super old owl. He never fought with Lyze of Kiel. Unless I'm completely crazy. And maybe I am.
Disappointed in how they made him a whole separate character.

And then, Combining the Pure Ones with St. Aggies was a smart time saver, but I didn't like it. It wasn't how I feel it should have been.

Also, we didn't meet Hortense/Mist! What about her? If there is another movie, and I completely expect another movie, what will Coryn/Nyroc escape to? Doesn't he live with the eagles? Where were the eagles? What about them? How are they going to not include them?

Otulissa! OMG. LOVED her in the movie. XD I love having a face for this character. I've been able to place almost all the owls in my mind, but I never could find a face for her. AND I LOVED HOW she looked. LOVED.

Hahaha.
Alright, I have much more to talk about, but I doubt anyone wnats to hear me go on and on and on and on.

Anyone else see it/read the books/ want to talk? :D

(BTW - I've been away from secundi for a week or so. I've had some things in real life pop up, and I think they are almost settled and I'll be coming back soon. I just had to post this!)

ETA: OOoook let's talk more, I need to continue talking XD

Umm, I loooove Ezylryb. One of my favorite characters. I enjoy him so so much! I thought he went well with the movie.

I didn't apprichiate how in the movie there was an overall similar plot within the same world with the same ccharacters, but no detail was explained AT ALL. None.

Nothing about the chaws. Nothing about the nestmaid snakes. I wanted more XD

Ryuukokoro

QuoteIf I remember correctly,

LOL! If you remember correctly? XD Aren't you like the biggest fan ever?

Hahaha I knew the book readers would have that to complain about. XD As soon as I read it on wiki I'm like "What? Kludd WAS Metalbeak? That's...weird." I like how they made him two separate characters, though, since I'm not a fan of the books (I mean, I haven't read them yet so I can't be a fan lol, not that I don't like them) so I don't have a pre-made attachment to that character. I think the way they did it enabled Soren to stay a young owl throughout the book and have his brother be an 'equal' to him. If Kludd became the leader of the Pure Ones in the movie, that pretty much throws him into an adult role, equal to the snowy owl king of the Guardians (I don't think they ever say his name in the movie but man was he pretty...) Anyway, allowing Kludd to be a separate character from Metalbeak allowed him to be an equal rival to Soren while keeping Soren as a young character. This is different in the books since Soren (presumably) grows up in the books and takes on more adult roles.

When I read on wiki Digger's personality and they didn't mention any insanity, I knew they tweaked him for the movie. I thought he was hilarious though. And a great foil for Twilight. I love the scene where they're about to fight the bats and he says Twilight should play one last battle song, and Twilight then plays a horrible song about how they're going to die. XD

But yes, I had a problem with the Twilight character as well, I don't think they converted him well into the movie. He doesn't seem to have much character development compared to the others. And they labeled him "the warrior" and when the echidna announced that I was like " 0_o What? HOW is he the warrior? We haven't even seen him fight!" And then he corrects the echidna saying "Warrior poet." And I was like "...okay but I still don't see him as a warrior." It's not like he fights any more than the others in the group. I'm sure this is different in the books, they just didn't do a good job bringing over enough character development from the books to the movie to support his character.

I agree Nyra was totally awesome. I love her almost totally white body and HER CREEPY EYES. They were all I could look at whenever she was on screen lol. The green/brown design of her irises was so awesome.

Also, was i the only one who was sad that Gilfy like completely disappeared in the last half of the movie? She and Soren were main characters and even with the addition of Digger and Twilight, it still felt like the movie focused on her and Soren. Then suddenly they get to the Guardian tree and she becomes a background character! I know they wanted to focus on Soren and Kiel's father/son thing but still I was sad she was gone from all but the background.

Otulissa, I really liked her look and the very few lines she got, but I feel she was BARELY in the movie at all. For someone who hasn't read the books, she has like four lines maybe. In the credits they show her and Soren bumping into each other and hearts appear over their heads and I didn't get that at ALL in the movie since she barely got any screen time. (Well maybe they shared one look or something.) But anyway, I'm sure that is gone into much more in the books.

Also, as someone who hasn't read the books, the fact that all these owls have human things was REALLY weird to see. I mean yes they have ONE short scene in a montage where they show the blacksmith owl making armor and claws, but there's so much more not explained! The owl culture has books, flags/banners, lights for their houses, that weird rope pulley for the metal fleck structure, metal gongs on the Guardian tree, armor and weapons, tons of stuff. HOW did they make all this without hands? lol. I just don't buy it. Again, I'm sure they go into that much more in the books.

Other than Twilight not getting enough characterization and the fact that these owls have books and stuff without real explanation, I feel completely satisfied as someone who saw the movie and hasn't read the books. Nothing else was confusing to me.

I also really liked the ending shot with Kludd and his eyes glow red as we see him looking at the helmet. >:3 I hope there's a sequel and they have him become the next Metalbeak. That would guide it back toward the books' storyline.

Ryuukokoro

Oh, and what was that big rodent creature that attacked Soren and Kludd at the beginning of the movie? Was that a tasmanian devil? I am guessing from the echidna that they are in Australia or a fantasy representation of Australia anyway lol

Neocridders

Gylfie was not as main a focus as she should have been. And neither were Twilight or Digger. But they are not as main as Gylfie and Soren. Kludd is almost not mentioned at all most of the next couple books, he is not important (or mentioned at least) until we learn about metal beak. Kludd does NOT fall from the tree. He pushes soren, threatens to eat Mrs. Plythever if she tells, and does it all for Nyra. She is testing him. His test was to kill a family member, and Soren was who he was to kill. And by pushing him out of the tree, he should have killed him. But he didn't know that an animal didn't get to him first, as most tragic young owls die when they fall. That's why it was such a big deal when they fell in the movie.
Baby owls don't live on the ground. They will be eaten.

The tasmanian devil was a shock. I was unsure what the heck that was about. I guess just to show the dangers of the ground?

And ummm... the love thing between Otulissa and Soren... yeah. Otulissa is not a barn owl, and she and he don't have any romance between them in the books. Not that I remember.

Ryuukokoro

Well I still like the movie representation better (or rather, it's the only one I've seen) since it allows Soren and Kludd to be equals. Plus it's sweet and portrays his optimistic character well, how Soren holds out hope that he will be able to rescue his brother right up until his little sister tells him that it was Kludd who moonblinked her. You can see his heart breaking as he is forced to face this, poor little guy. I think they did that very cleverly.

I think Gylfie was a good focus in the movie up until they reach the Guardians tree. I truly felt like she and Soren were the focus of the film, up until that point. Then she just fades into the background, with Soren's attention diverted between Kiel and Otulissa. I'd have liked a scene or two with just her adjusting to the ways of the Guardians at the tree, but I do acknowledge they were extremely pressed for time. They had to shove three books worth of content into one movie! And not even a very long movie. It was only one hour and a half.

So wait, you say the tasmanian devil thing was a shock to you? As in, it doesn't happen in the books? Interesting... Maybe the movie wanted to stress the fact that they live in Australia... although maybe not. I dunno how many random kids in the audience would recognize that it was a tasmanian devil that attacked Kludd and Soren lol.

Oh, and there's no romance between Otulissa and Soren in the books? lol. Well maybe it was two different owls who bump into each other in the credits and have little hearts over their heads. Hard to tell, since the credits are done in 'shadow puppet' kind of style. But I'm pretty sure Soren gave her a 'look' in the movie. You know, those stupid looks main character guys give the single female who walks on screen halfway through the movie and only exists to be a love interest. XD *shrug* Who knows. Maybe it is a movie-only thing they had going, or maybe I'm misreading signals.

BTW there's an Islander waiting for you to name her in the current Howl's Island thread, Neo. *nudge nudge*

Neocridders

I know what you are talking about. It seemed to me that during the movie there was a moment. And I was like.... no. That must have just been my imagining.
But then the hearts at the end... ha. Wow. I wonder what that's going to do to the film... Soren isn't supposed to end up with Otulissa.

Ryuukokoro

Maybe they will combine Otulissa and Pellimore into one character for the movies... *scratches head* That would be weird, but wouldn't surprise me. Judging by the amount of characters listed on wiki, there's just tooooo many to fit into one or a couple movies lol. (I would have really liked to see those eagles you mentioned!)

Neocridders

Well, you see, that might be something, but I just can't see it. Otulissa and Pelli are two very different characters, Pelli being a very kind barn owl, and Otulissa being an extremely intelligent, dedicated, but in a way 'snobby' spotted owl. Now, that's the impression I got from her. I did love her character, but it just doesn't seem right to me.
I do think they failed in the books on describing Pelli very well.

I mean... in the books, honestly it was like one book ended, and the next all the sudden Soren has a mate and she is about to lay some eggs. I dunno. I was disappointed in the lack of development in the relationship between them before they were official mates.

But yeah. Whatever.
It will be interesting to see how they go about that ;)

Ryuukokoro

Yes it will interesting to see different takes on the story! ^^

lol you know, I got that impression about Pelli too. Even the minor-seeming characters got some personality description on wiki, but Pelli just got the description "Soren's mate." What an odd choice, to just toss a mate at Soren without much development.

You know, they kinda did the same thing with Warriors! Not exactly the same. But I remember there was a big gap between the first series and the second, and in the first series, Firestar's kits weren't even born yet, and in the second, they were already partially grown up and apprentices! I really wanted to see their daughter's childhoods as kits and Firestar acting like a dad to the kits. Ah well. I'm sure the writers' all have reasons for what they do lol.

Ryuukokoro

Hahahah one of the video review sites I go to has reviewed it! I'm still waiting for Movie Bob, my fave reviewer, to put up his. But in the meantime:

(Keep in mind a critic's job is to bash stuff, so don't get too offended lol. I like some of his lines, like "this movie is bleeding-diamonds-out-of-my-eyes gorgeous" XD )

red_uni387

#10
i only just saw it today so yay can FINALLY post XD

IT WAS SO AWESOME. like, yeah it deviated from the plot, but it wasn't so bad like the percy jackson movie.

oh gosh, i fell in love with digger. he's supposed to be the philosophical one, but his retarded head tilting and crazy spaz attitude is soooo loveable <3 seriously love him so much. soooo much. i could go on and on about how adorable he is XD

the one thing i really did not like was Mrs. P. she does NOT have eyes. it clearly says in the book that she's only got slight indents where the eyes are supposed to be. :(

edit: Ryuu, I take it that critic did not read the book since he said 'vague process called moon blinking'. it's explained much better in the book cause gylfie actually has some time to talk lol

and his talk about stupid lines makes me want to whack him. first of all, soren was NOT talking about Kludd being a traitor, he was talking about the added character being a traitor, a supposed guardian. that is definately something to freeze and say something stupid about. geez. -____-

AND the first thing soren says after grimble tells him to find the guardians is 'they're real?' NOT 'where do i find them?' i seriously doubt this guy even watched the movie closely.

SeaCrest

Well personally I like the graphics and hate the plot. Since when did ALL the Guardians get trapped in the Devil's Triangle?! And what happened to Madam Plonk?? That and what happened to Sporn? And I totally agree about Hortense >_> She's like a major character in the end! And Kludd was never snatched by St. Aggies...

red_uni387

well it took them a while to realize ezylryb was caught, so they had to make it shorter by adding in that traitor owl and catching everyone...
madame plonk they still have a chance to introduce with the excuse of the band not seeing the entire tree yet, hopefully they bring that up in the next movie if there is one.
poor hortense :( she's amazing and heroic and they can't even give her a second of screentime >__<
and again, they probably did that so the movie wouldn't have to dragged out longer.

i don't think the movie makers read the entire series :(

Ryuukokoro

*runs through with random hilarious picture* XD wheeeeee

Neocridders

Haha XD

Red- I bet the movie makers did read the entire series. And I bet they had multiple people that were making the script that new the series well. I wouldn't be surprised if Lasky helped to write the script as well XD But who knows.

I've studied being a film maker a bit, and you have to remember that you can't stay 'true to the fans' most of the time. The fans being the original people who loved the books and are watching the movies. You have to make it as close as possible, but change it so it is fit for as many audiences as possible.

Think about it. In my opinion, the book audience is for anyone age 10 and up interested in a fun fantasy. it's not too serious for the most part, and it's got a good plot. It'd keep the intrest of the teenage/adult audience as well as the intrest of the children.

The movies, however, are for as many people as possible. That means for 5 year olds, that means for the parents bringing the five year olds. That means for anyone else who thinks it looks cool. It has to be short without too much involved plot for a five year old to understand and keep intrest. It has to have enough plot, though, and enough humor and enough action, to keep the parents and anyone else watching it entertained.

It's just how the movie world works. It's mostly for money and making people happy. You can never make everyone happy. They try their best to be true to themselves, and make as many possible audiences happy.

:)

red_uni387

I meant the critic ryuu linked to probably didn't read the series, not the movie makers ^^

Neocridders

Oh, I totally didn't read that critic thing she posted o.o Why not? I dunno! Gonna read it soon when I get home! :D
