Title: Horse Genetics?
Post by: Ravvana on June 24, 2012, 09:38:14 PM
I saw this horse today at a show I was at with Sean. I'm at a loss -- is he tobiano with leopard appaloosa? or extremely spotty homozygous tobiano? or something else entirely?

(Note that I didn't take the photos; I grabbed them from a friend's FB page who was also at the show.)

He's definitely tobiano.  The little spots are likely just cat tracks, but there is some evidence that there may be a separate pattern that creates colored ticking in pinto horses.  Like what is going on with this mare http://www.chevaldecouleur.fr/fr/index02.php?2009%2F06%2F19%2F91-vision-morinda (http://www.chevaldecouleur.fr/fr/index02.php?2009%2F06%2F19%2F91-vision-morinda)

The white of pinto patterns lay over top of appy patterns so his colored areas would be white with leopard spotting if he had that pattern too.

He's beautiful, whatever he is! XD

I agree he looks like a tobiano that just happened to be spotty in the white parts, I've seen some like that.
