iPod help

Ok, so I bought myself an iPod touch last year and I put all my music on it. I hate dealing with iTunes, its always changing and it took me forever to figure out how to use it when I first got my iPod. I haven't put any new music on my iPod since the first month of buying it...My computer crashed the day after Christmas last year and I had to replace my hard drive and start fresh. My iPod was synced with the old hard drive...I want to put new music on my iPod but I'm afraid to sync it with the new hard drive because someone told me it would erase everything I had on my iPod. Is there a way around this?
