For customs/semi-customs, I try to only open as many slots as I can reasonably finish in a day or 2.
For breeding/young, I try to have things ready to go *before* posting the thread. With Dragons of Nova Terra, you will get your new dragon as soon as it hatches in RP. With anything else, expect a 1-2 week delay for babies to show up after breedings are finalized. However, after that, they will grow on schedule, because I color all stages at once, and simply update your stage on the grow date.
