Title: Home Decorating - Get Ready!
Post by: Silvanon on November 13, 2012, 08:14:01 PM
My coding knowledge has advanced enough that I'll be able to get Home Decorating up and running soon, hopefully within the next few days here.

When decorating your home, you will be given rooms to decorate.  The number of rooms will depend on the size of your home.  For example, a hut takes 3 Units of land, so it gives 3 rooms you can decorate.

The items you can decorate will be called Props.  Props will be artwork submitted by users.  There will be a new area on the site were you can submit props you have created.  There will be another area where you can view new props submitted by other people and vote on whether that prop meets the terms of service (no copyright violations, no porno images, etc.).  When a prop has enough votes that it meets terms of service, it will become available for purchase on the Secundi site.  (A prop that receives more than one vote that it doesn't meet terms of service will be removed, and the user's prop creation privileges will be revoked.)  A portion of the purchase price will go back to the original creator each time their prop is purchased.

Once you purchase a prop, you'll be able to add it to a room, and then use a drag-and-drop interface to arrange it within the room.  Other people will be able to see the rooms you've decorated.

So, you may want to start working on props.  Any style artwork is fine, whether traditional, digital, pixel art, etc. -- as long as you own all content and it's not depicting something offensive, etc.  The room will be sized 400 x 400 pixels.

This will be the basic background for every room:

However, it is possible to create props that cover the entire 400 x 400 area, so I'm assuming at least some people will be creating their own room background props to cover up that one for a differently style and proportioned room.  Props bigger than 400 x 400 will not be allowed.

This looks so good! I'll need to make up some more SG though...

I've got the majority of the coding for this in place, but it all needs to be debugged.  It's all accessible from the Property link on the left side of the main site.  If anyone has any prop artwork ready, please go ahead and add it to the system using the Property -> Manage Props page.  Once uploaded, please post here so we know there's an item to test out.

Voting also needs to be tested - I need at least 10 testers for this.  Once an item is in the system needing votes, you can vote on it by going to Property -> Vote On Props

You shouldn't be able to vote on your own props, or on props you've already voted on.  Each time you vote it should earn you 200 SG.

If you vote on something, please post here to let us know.

I'll announce when debugging is done, after which we'll no longer need anyone posting their actions.

Actually,  I think I've got everything pretty much debugged.   So far the only prop you can buy is a window I made.   Here's my room with a pair of windows added and arranged:

http://secundi.net/property.php?ID=1

I've also made a bunny which needs 9 more votes to be buy-able.  Beyond that, you guys need to make & submit what props you want.  :)

If we want to submit an item that can come in multiple colors (for example carpet) do we submit the item multiple times, once per color? Is that even allowed? XD Or should we stick to one color per thing we create?

You can most definitely submit multiple colors, and yes you'd need to submit once per color.

Okay ^^ Is it able to handle transparent spaces as well? Since the floor on the default template doesn't go all the way to the side so I have a bit of transparent space on both sides.

It's ok to use PNG's or GIFs with transparencies.  But if you're simply adding extra transparent space to position things, don't - people can drag and drop the items to get them into the spot they'd prefer to put them in.  (I'd recommend buying property & a house and trying it out first if you're unsure what I mean.)

Buying property and a house is rather expensive, can't do that all at once :P But yeah I assumed it was a drag and drop system. It has transparency on the site because the floor's sides in your example aren't straight and I want my floor to match the default template. If I make it one big rectangle it will look weird :P I could upload what I have right now and you can delete it after? I'm okay with you deleting it afterwards if you just want to test what I mean/what it looks like :P

Ah, I see what you're getting at, and yeah, you can have transparent bits where there needs to be, no problem.

Alright I've uploaded one color. Once I know it works as it should I'll add more.

Edit: I noticed I uploaded the previous version, I made a tiny fix to it afterwards. I went to change this but the edit button next to my prop isn't working, it leads to a page not found error thingy.

Ah, yes, that's one of the few pages I don't have coded up yet for this system.  I'll let you know as soon as I do have it up.

Hey Silv, is it possible for people to have the first piece of land free or at a discounted rate so they can start on houses. Or something like, submit so many accepted props and get your 1 free piece of land?

Well I gave up on ever finding the cotton I need to build my teepee and just bought more land to build the next size house lol  But I now have 3 rooms to decorate instead of just one, and eagerly await new submissions of props.  My first room is looking rather cold and bare, with just a window and a bunny.. poor cold bunny!  Voted on YLO's carpet, so I can give my bunny somethign a bit warmer to rest on lol

YLO on colors, if you're taking requests, I'd love something in grey and black :)

lol that's a good idea, Kadana! I was at a lost about finding cotton myself. I'll just upgrade!

lol I think its kinda sad, that the mats needed for the bigger homes are easier to come by.  Seems a wee bit backward lol  But oh well, I;d probably have upgraded form a teepee eventually anyway.. maybe.. I like the teepee lol

I've uploaded a couple of props....I sure am bad at straight lines >.>

Whatever happened to YLO's floor? I seem unable to find it in the props store.

Post by: Winged on November 21, 2012, 07:48:42 AM
Props have to be voted on, presumably YLO's floor hasn't got enough votes yet.
Title: Re: Home Decorating - Get Ready!
Post by: TheLeet on November 21, 2012, 07:53:12 AM
Oh yes, that's probably why. I kind of assumed that it would have enough votes by now :)
Title: Re: Home Decorating - Get Ready!
Post by: YourLoveOnly on November 21, 2012, 09:04:14 AM
Yeah it needs 10 votes, doesn't seem like 10 people or more are paying much attention to this section yet. I hope it gets accepted soon. And sure, I don't mind taking requests. Do you want black and/or grey carpet or tiles or?

I plan on doing alternate layouts too (yay TheLeet for submitting one!) but for now just wanna do some floors and walls for the basic template, then move onto some furniture probably :3 If the carpet gets accepted and seems to work I wanna do a bunch of different colors, and a tile flooring seems good too, for kitchens and bathrooms ^^ Maybe a wooden one too?

I'd love a blueish green carpet! Yeah that's what i was thinking, hopefully more people will start looking at the props.

Hmm...maybe a thread where we could post whenever new props are submitted might be useful. That way people would be more aware of new stuff.
The prop voting section is kind of hidden away a little on the website so I see why people wouldn't go and check it regularly. I certainly don't.  :-\

Just noticed that the carpet prop covers the bunny prob. Would it be possible to add a system of layering props, or is there a way that i haven't noticed?
Title: Re: Home Decorating - Get Ready!
Post by: YourLoveOnly on November 21, 2012, 09:30:34 AM
Yeah if they are layered in order of submission that would be odd XD I hope there is indeed a way of layering them. And I agree with TheLeet, a thread for that would be good. Maybe we can create one in Art Gallery? Just one stickied thread people can post in when they've submitted something new.

Post by: TheLeet on November 21, 2012, 09:34:03 AM
I think the "order props" tab is supposed to be for layering. I'm not sure though - it doesn't seem to work. I enter numbers but every time I navigate away, they reset to 0.

I'm working on some mlpfim inspired props in Flash. Hopefully I'll have a bit of time to myself to actually finish them.

Currently working on an outdoorsy background, then will work on smaller props like bookshelves, lamps, and stuff :3

And at some point I want to make an "inside a stable" background >u>

EDIT: Maybe someone should create an Art Gallery thread dedicated to showing off new props to vote on, that way people are aware votes are needed? :3

Ah yes i see that now Leet. And i've got the same problem with that page.

Did a teal one for you Winged ^^

I plan on adding basic colors once this one is approved and looks good, the blue one needed a small fix. Want to add yellow, red, green (since we already have blue) at least, also white and black I think? Can also do grey, orange, pink, purple or whatever else upon request if needed, changing the color is really easy ^^ I just don't wanna throw in like 30 colors right away because that seems like I'm overwhelming the store and all of Secundi with one item XD

I do suggest once we get a lot of props that we can maybe put them into categories? Like complete room layouts, walls, floor, electronics, decorations etcetera

Thanks for letting me know the order props page isn't working correctly.  I'll try to figure out the problem when I get a bit of time tonight.

Ohh A black or dark charcoal grey carpet and soft dove grey walls would be awesome!

I wantedto try and work on some things when I got home form work today, but I'm too tired to mess with adobe now.  I thought I;d have the weekend, but it looks like I'll be working now through sun atleast :S  Stupid new manager,I have GOT to find a new job heh

ETA: Ordering of props seems to be working now :)

The Order Props feature is working now - you can use it to layer your props how you want. :)

I believe I have the Edit Prop function up and working now.  When you make an edit to a prop, it sends the prop back to unverified status - it must receive one additional vote before it can be put back up in the store (provided it was there already.  If you edit before it got all 10 original needed votes, then it just needs the remainder of the original 10 to be verified.)

Are we allowed to use brushes or patterns to decorate items that are either free for use, or that we own a commercial liscense to, as long as we make a note and give proper credit in the description of the item, or would that be against the rules? I'm able to reproduce what I want myself, but its so much easier and less time consuming with a brush to make a pattern so I was curious.

I think as long as you have appropriate rights to use it, it's fine.

How do we remove props we placed in a room from that room, without placing them in another room?

Ok, now on the prop inventory page, in the room selection box there is an option for "Remove" which, if selected, will remove the prop from your home rather than just moving it to a different room.
